Sulfur Filters

A woman with light skin wrapped in a pink towel and a pink towel turban, covering her hair, is pinching her nose from rotten egg smell and making a disgusted face.

If your water has a foul or unusual odor, it’s a clear sign something’s not right. A distinct “rotten egg” smell usually means your water contains hydrogen sulfide gas. While it typically isn’t harmful at the levels found in most homes, it can make your water unpleasant to use and smell. Our sulfur filtration systems remove hydrogen sulfide and restore your water to a clean, fresh state you can trust.

Comparison of Sulfur Bacteria

Occurrence & Characteristics of Hydrogen Sulfide (“Rotten Egg Smell”)

Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless gas that can naturally occur in groundwater. It’s often produced by sulfur-reducing bacteria that use sulfur from decaying organic matter in low-oxygen environments. These bacteria can live in deep or shallow wells and even inside plumbing systems. Along with producing hydrogen sulfide gas, they also create a slime that promotes bacterial growth and can clog wells, plumbing lines, and water filters.

The amount of hydrogen sulfide present in water varies depending on local geology. It’s most commonly found in areas with shale or sandstone formations and is often linked to water with low pH or high levels of iron and manganese. It can also occur near hydrocarbons or peat deposits.

Hydrogen sulfide has a very strong odor—about 85% of people can detect it at concentrations as low as 0.03 parts per million. While the EPA has not set a specific maximum contaminant level, high concentrations can be flammable and toxic. However, in household water, it’s generally not a direct health risk.

What it does cause, though, are corrosion and damage to plumbing and appliances. Hydrogen sulfide can leach metals from pipes, darken silverware, discolor copper and brass, stain laundry and fixtures, and corrode metal components in water heaters, dishwashers, and even A/C coils.

Sulfur Removal Methods

At Five Star Water Systems, we offer several effective solutions for removing hydrogen sulfide from your water. The best treatment method depends on several factors, including the amount of sulfur, iron, and manganese present, as well as whether bacterial contamination needs to be addressed. Our team will test your water and recommend the right system to restore it to a clean, fresh, and odor-free state.

Our sulfur filters will also save you money by protecting your dishwasher, water heater, plumbing lines, shower heads, faucets, and even your A/C system from corrosion and sulfur bacteria buildup. Since sulfur gas is highly corrosive, our systems are engineered to neutralize it before it causes damage. You’ll enjoy clear, fresh-tasting water with no sulfur odor—just clean, reliable water throughout your home.

Iron Filters

Iron in Well Water

After hardness and hydrogen sulfide (the “rotten egg” smell), iron is the most common issue found in well water. It’s easy to spot by the red or brown stains it leaves on sinks, tubs, and laundry, and it can also cause metallic tastes and buildup in your plumbing and appliances.

Iron typically appears in three main forms in well water:

Bacterial Iron: Caused by iron bacteria that thrive in well water and plumbing systems. These bacteria create a slimy buildup often seen in toilet tanks or inside softeners and filters.

Ferric Iron: Also known as red water iron, this form develops when clear water iron is exposed to oxygen, forming visible rust-colored particles that give water a reddish tint.

Ferrous Iron: Commonly called clear-water iron, this form is dissolved in water and only becomes visible when it’s exposed to air. It’s most often found in deeper wells and groundwater sources low in oxygen.

Because iron can exist in multiple forms, it can be difficult to treat effectively without proper testing. The right treatment method depends on factors such as the type of iron present, the water’s pH level, and the overall water chemistry. Once your water is analyzed, selecting the correct filtration or oxidation system becomes straightforward.

While iron and manganese aren’t considered health hazards, they can cause staining, unpleasant taste, and buildup in plumbing and appliances. Iron leaves reddish-brown stains, while manganese creates brownish-black marks that regular detergents and bleach can make worse. Over time, these minerals can clog pipes, damage fixtures, and reduce water pressure — increasing maintenance and energy costs.

At Five Star Water Systems, we offer advanced filtration systems that eliminate iron and manganese, protect your plumbing, and restore clean, fresh water throughout your home.
